In anticipation for Command & Conquer 4, EA have released free versions of a few of the early Command & Conquer series. It is completely free and patched to work on more version of Windows besides Windows 95.
The free games include Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Tiberium Dawn, Command & Conquer: Tiberium Sun and it's expansion Firestorm. Generals is not in that list, I'm afraid as they released classics related to the Tiberium series.
The Command & Conquer series began more than 15 years ago (1995) with the release of Command & Conquer: Red Alert by the now-defunct Westwood Studios.
Even before Command & Conquer, Westwood Studios was already famous for another game that they made earlier. The game was called Dune and it created a whole new genre called the real time strategy games (RTS).
Red Alert tells a "what if..." story where Einstein developed a time machine and went back in time to eliminate Hitler. In this case, World War 2 did not happen because Germany go to war... instead, it happened because Russia, under Joseph Stalin did.
The Tiberium series kick started an alternate universe story where modern technology was developed a lot earlier and mankind faced an ecological dilemma with the arrival of an alien plant-mineral thing called Tiberium. It provides energy yet it also destroys the environment, making the area it inhabits toxic to any living being.
