Doukutsu Monogatari (Cave Story)

A long time ago (I'd say around 2004), a friend of mine asked me to try out this game. It's a free game, distributed on the net. Now, at that time, what drew me to try it was not of how amazing the story was, the number of weapons, upgrade, graphics or music or even the fun factor.

No, I decided to try playing this game because of the circumstances in its creation.

It was made by one man and it took him 5 years to complete it.

What started as a curiosity led to an amazing experience. It dawned on me early on that Pixel knew what he wanted and built his game to as close as perfection as he could at that time. It is very rare for a game developer to have the chance to be able to perfect his game. This is due mostly to time constraints (thus it took him 5 years).
The story is about you, who woke up underground with no memory of how you got there. You came across a village populated by rabbit-like people called Mimigas who are threatened by a person called the Doctor. It's your job to stop the Doctor and his henchmen and rescue the Mimigas and maybe reveal some of your past as well.
Weapons upgrades are interesting. Picking up some the upgrades dropped by enemies enables you to level up the weapons, making them more powerful (except one particular weapon... :p ). Getting hit will lower the weapon's levels. And there are a couple of endings which depend on you finding some secret items.

All in all, the gameplay is solid and well polished. The story is amazing and the characters are very memorable (what the heck is Balrog anyway). The learning curve for the game is pretty low and you keep finding new things that spice up the game making sure it's not boring.

Pixel himself is just as amazing. He coded the game, drew the characters, created the music and on top of that, managed to write and direct an engaging story.

The game was initially made for the PC but have been ported to the Mac OSX, Linux and even the AmigaOS. There's even a PSP and XBox version of the game. All of them ported by fans I supposed.

Recently, Pixel Studio is working on porting it to the Nintendo Wii.

I remember making a post that briefly mentions this game but I thought I should make a proper post about it. I would recommend everyone to play this game at least once.
